Alginate Dressing

Alginate dressing is an advanced moist wound dressing, composed with biodegradable, highly absorbent alginate fiber which is derived from seaweed, available in flat and rope pattern. On contact with exudate, these dressings form a moist gel through a process of ion exchange. They are soft and conformable, easy to apply in cavity wounds or irregular-shaped wounds. Alginate dressing with excellent absorption and good gel forming effect. The alginate dressing consisting of calcium alginate,  provide superior absorption and ideally designed for all moderate to heavily exuding both superficial and cavity wounds.

Alginate Dressing FAQs

Alginate Dressing FAQs

  • Q.
  • How the dressing works?
  • A.
  • When in contact with wound exudate, calcium ions in the dressing exchange with sodium ions in the exudate causing the dressing to transform from a dry, fibrous state to a firm, moist gel. The dressing provides a moist environment helping to create optimal wound-healing conditions and maintains its integrity allowing for easy, atraumatic removal.

  • Q.
  • What the major clinical benefits of using the dressing?
  • A.
    • Absorbs large amount of exudate, enhances wear time and reduces dressing change frequency.

    • Alginate fiber transforms to gel after absorbing exudate which reduces the risk of maceration.

    • Does not adhere to wound site, can be easily removed without pain or trauma.

    • The unique dressing integrity makes for one-piece removal.

  • Q.
  • When to use alginate dressing?
  • A.
  • Alginate dressing is indicated for the moderate to heavily exuding chronic and acute wounds with minor bleeding, such as diabetic foot ulcer, pressure ulcer, leg venous and arterial ulcer, first and second degree burns, post-operative wounds and traumatic wounds, absorbs large amount exudates, provides a moist environment for wound bed and facilitates healing process. The flat alginate dressing can be applied on shallow wounds. The alginate rope can be applied in cavity wounds.

  • Q.
  • What are contraindications?
  • A.
  • 1) Do not use on Third-degree burns.

    2) Do not use on dry wounds, heavy bleeding wounds as a primary dressing.

    3) Do not use on surgical implantation.

    4) Do not use on the patients with a known hypersensitivity to the product itself or to its components.

  • Q.
  • How to use the dressing?
  • A.
  • Carefully cleanse the wound with saline and dry surrounding skin. Alginate dressing should be folded or cut to the shape of the wound and applied dry directly. The Alginate dressing should then be covered with an appropriate moisture retentive secondary dressing such as, but not limited to,Non-woven dressings, Film dressing, Hydrocolloid dressing, or Foam dressing onto the wound.
